FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES – gives practical experiences by connecting life skills to the core subject areas. The class has an emphasis on kitchen and food safety to help students gain confidence in cooking independently. The lessons focus on developing basic cooking skills so that they can follow simple recipes using the right tools, measuring techniques and understanding common cooking terms. The students work in groups of 4-5 to prepare simple recipes in class. Decision making skills will be enhanced when the students will use the Choose My Plate initiative to make healthy food choices on a daily basis. Long term independent projects will help them sample a variety of foods from different parts of the world. Students use reading and math skills for following directions, measuring and using fractions as they prepare delicious snacks and meals to share with family and friends. This class will help them develop an appreciation for food and cooking.
