MATH NUMERACY courses are offered during the Related Arts block. Both courses are full year courses for 6th and 7th graders. For eighth grade students who are enrolled, this is a semester course focused on preparation for the Spring CMT. Students are selected for this class on the basis of: 1) performance on the CMT (basic of below basic scores); teacher recommendation or parent request.
The Math Numeracy Program is designed to provide students with additional support beyond the regular math class. Our aim is to increase students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics and improve their performance on the CMT. Classwork and homework questions follow the CMT format utilizing CMT vocabulary based on sample release questions. The additional math support emphasizes pre-teaching math topics to struggling math students. Students build their knowledge base to facilitate learning in their regular math class. Varied instructional strategies are used to engage students. Many of the lessons focus on providing a kinesthetic learning experience. Students also learn test-taking strategies.
