LITERACY courses are offered during the Related Arts block. Both courses are full year courses for 6th and 7th graders. For eighth grade students who are enrolled, this is a semester course focused on preparation for the Spring CMT. Students are selected for this class on the basis of: 1) performance on the CMT (basic of below basic scores); teacher recommendation or parent request.
The Literacy and Read 180 Program offered to students are designed around research based strategies which lead to proficiency in reading. Direct instruction of strategies is given in the four major categories: word attack, vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension. Individualized instruction for non-readers is focused on oral reading, sight vocabulary and phonics. Students’ progress is monitored closely through pre and post-assessments in each area of study. Students are given access to a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, from the internet, newspapers and magazines. This approach not only provides practice in the crucial skills needed to be successful at reading, but also helps build the knowledge base of each student.
In the System 44 Next Generation Program, students will receive direct instruction in phonics, decoding, reading, and writing skills as outlined by the Common Core.
